The Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation Turkey Drive Committee makes an annual commitment to provide turkeys for Thanksgiving to families in Michigan and Ohio who might not otherwise be able to enjoy this special meal.
Thanksgiving turkeys have been donated by the Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation and its members to underprivileged families, veterans, women’s shelters, etc. since 1980. and each year the list of charitable groups asking for turkeys grows. There are more requests than we could ever fill. We need your help!.
Thanksgiving is a time to reflect, give thanks, and help those who are less fortunate. We are asking you to pitch in. A $300 donation to the Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation Turkey Drive will provide turkeys for 10 families. When you consider that each turkey serves about 12 people, that equals enough Thanksgiving turkey for 120 people. In addition to, or instead of, donating money, you can also give food (canned, boxed, or bottled) or other goods like clothes or housewares.

It’s that time of year again – the leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the smell of pumpkin spice fills the air. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and that means one thing: turkey time!
But for many families, putting a turkey on the table can be a challenge. That’s where Thanksgiving Turkey Drives come in These amazing initiatives help to ensure that everyone can enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal, regardless of their circumstances
So. what is a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive?
In a nutshell it’s a campaign where individuals organizations, and businesses come together to collect and donate turkeys to families in need. These turkeys are then distributed to food banks, shelters, and other community organizations, who in turn provide them to families who would otherwise go without.
There are many different ways to participate in a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive:
- Donate a turkey: This is the most direct way to help. You can purchase a turkey from your local grocery store or donate one that you’ve already purchased.
- Make a monetary donation: Many organizations accept monetary donations, which they use to purchase turkeys.
- Volunteer your time: Many Turkey Drives need volunteers to help with tasks such as collecting turkeys, sorting donations, and distributing turkeys to families.

High Five Turkey Drive Retail & Community Outreach “Paper Hands”Promotion
Help us raise money at your registers and give back to the charity of your choice!
By taking part in our paper turkey program, your company can contribute significantly to the Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation’s Annual High Five Turkey Drive! Paper turkeys are an easy and entertaining way to raise money while demonstrating to your clients and the community that you care about feeding the hungry. Ultimately, all of the money you raise will be donated to the charity of your choice in the form of turkey purchases!
Here’s how the paper turkey program works:
- The Midwest Independent Retailers Foundation will send you a starter package that includes turkey hand cutouts and a poster to hang in your store to spread awareness.
- Have your cashiers place the paper turkeys at the register and invite customers to purchase one for a suggested donation of $1, $5, or even $10.
- The buyer has the option to sign the High Five paper turkey, and we recommend that you put it in a prominent location within the store. To raise as much awareness as possible, paper turkeys can be hung from the ceiling, placed on windows, or displayed on walls.
- Program runs from September 15th – November 15th.

What was a turkey drive?
Turkey drives could include “shooers” who herded the turkeys, children who scattered feed in the path to guide the birds, and covered wagons filled with grain to feed them. In some cases the journeys were epic. One drive took birds from Ohio to Missouri, another from Iowa to Denver.
What was a turkey drive in the 17th century?
In the 17th century, before the introduction of trucks and refrigerated railway cars, a turkey drive was the only way to get poultry from farm to market. Such drives were no trivial matter, either: Birds by the thousands were sometimes driven hundreds of miles over several days; foxes and other predators would thin the herd along the way.
What is the family-to-family turkey drive?
Join Family-to-Family’s Annual Turkey Drive! Help make Thanksgiving happen for all the families in our “extended family.” Consider making a $30 donation to purchase a turkey plus one side dish (e.g. potatoes or stuffing) for one recipient F-to-F family. Or, buy a “flock of turkeys” (you choose how many) to feed more than one family.
