We decided to conduct a deep-dive investigation into the fish fry offerings at Walmart stores and on Walmartcom What types of batter do they sell? What are the prices like? Are there any high quality options or just cheap generic batters? We aimed to uncover everything you need to know before heading to Walmart when a fish fry is on the menu.
Here’s what we discovered during our quest to find fish fry at Walmart:
In-Store Selection Varies but Tends to Be Limited
Walmart stores that do have a fresh seafood counter or fridge may offer one or two varieties of fish fry batter mixes near that section. However, selection is very limited compared to a full-service grocery store or fish market
During our in-person checks, we spotted some all-purpose “fish and chip” style batters at a couple of stores. But we didn’t see any options specifically for lighter fish frys or craft-style batters. It seems the in-store choices cater more to deep frying than pan frying.
Store Brand Batters – Affordable But Not Always the Best Quality
The fish fry batters we found at Walmart stores were primarily their cheaper Great Value brand. A 32 oz container was priced around $2.50 – $3.50. That’s very wallet-friendly.
However, we found the texture of the Walmart brand batters to be a bit thin and lacking flavor. They get the job done if you’re in a pinch. But they won’t yield the same light, crispy coating you’d get from a higher-end batter brand.
The Walmart Website Offers More Variety
If your local Walmart store falls short on selection, check Walmart.com. They carry a handful of name-brand batter mixes that aren’t available on the shelves.
We found batters from Andy’s, Louisiana Fish Fry, Shore Lunch and others online. Prices start at around $4 for a 1 lb bag. While not dirt cheap, these batters will likely produce better results than Walmart’s generic ones.
Can Also Shop Walmart’s Grocery Pickup/Delivery
One perk of Walmart’s website having better selection is that you can buy fish fry batters through the grocery pickup or delivery service.
Just add whatever batter brand and quantity you want from Walmart.com to your online order. Then swing through the pickup spot at your local store or have it brought to your door. No wandering the aisles required!
DIY Batter is Easy with Pantry Staples
If you strike out finding a good pre-made batter option at Walmart, simple DIY batters take just minutes to mix up. You likely have the ingredients on hand:
- All-purpose flour
- Cornstarch
- Seasonings (Cajun seasoning, paprika, garlic powder)
- Sparkling water or beer
- Egg

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, after the “Shark Tank” episode aired on January 14, 2018, Joe’s Gourmet Fish Fry sold out of its one-pound bags of breading mix and had a two-week backlog of orders. Maranda said the show made her “vision board come true.”

Although, with Facebook posts as recent as July 17, 2023, it appears Joe’s Gourmet Fish Fry is still in business, although in what capacity is unclear. Joe’s Gourmet Fish Fry appeared on “Shark Tank” in 2018, pitching their breaded seasoning mix for all kinds of seafood.
Does Joe’s gourmet fish fry sell fried chicken?
There has been some traction in recent years for Joe’s Gourmet Fish Fry. In 2019, Joe and Maranda Dowell appeared on QVC where they sold 2,300 packages of fried and frozen Southern fried chicken breasts. The product was sold in an exclusive 2.5-pound packages, offering 10 of its 4-ounce portions of chicken breaded in the proprietary seasoning mix.
