If you have a solid plan, roasting a turkey doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Here is a helpful tip for successful turkey cooking, as provided by the USDA, the foremost expert on the subject.
What Temperature to Cook a Turkey: 325°F or 350°F?
How to roast a turkey
As long as you adhere to the recommended cooking times and don’t overcook the turkey, roasting a turkey is actually quite simple.
At the recommended oven temperature of 350°F, a 12-pound unstuffed turkey will cook in about two and a half hours, or three hours at 325°F. A further 20 to 30 minutes should be added if the turkey is stuffed.
An unstuffed 14-pound turkey will require 3 12 hours at 325°F or 3 hours at 350°F in the oven. A further 20 to 30 minutes should be added if the turkey is stuffed.
At the suggested oven temperature of 325°F, a 15-pound unstuffed turkey will cook in about 3 34 hours. A further 20 to 30 minutes should be added if the turkey is stuffed.
At the suggested oven temperature of 325°F, an unstuffed 18-pound turkey will cook in approximately 4 14 hours. It will take around 4 12 hours if the turkey is stuffed.
At 350°F, a 20-pound unstuffed turkey will cook in about 4 14 hours. It will take 4 12 hours if the turkey is stuffed.
At the suggested oven temperature of 325°F, a 22-pound unstuffed turkey will cook in about 5 hours. It will take between 5 14 and 5 12 hours if the turkey is stuffed.
At the suggested oven temperature of 325°F, a 25-pound unstuffed turkey will cook in approximately 5 14 hours. It will take between 5 12 and 5 34 hours to stuff a turkey.
5. To brown the skin, remove the foil after 1 to 1 1/2 hours of cooking. Brush with vegetable oil to enhance browning, if desired.
3. In a shallow roasting pan with a rack that is 2 inches deep, place the turkey breast-side up. Turkey Safety: Using a Thermometer recommends placing a meat thermometer in the thigh. If desired, add up to 1/2 cup of water to the pan’s bottom.
For uniform cooking results, the USDA recommends cooking the stuffing outside of the bird. If you insist on stuffing the turkey, stuff loosely and follow the steps below.
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. To find out the approximate cooking time for the turkey, check the wrapper (see the chart below). Remove the neck from the cavity of the turkey and the giblet bag from the breast. Wash hands, but don’t wash the turkey instead; use paper towels to pat the skin dry.
6. A whole turkey is considered to be cooked when a food thermometer registers a minimum internal temperature of 165°F in the thickest part of the thigh. Check the stuffing, wing, and thickest part of the breast for temperature. If the stuffing doesn’t reach 165°F or higher, put it back in the oven to finish cooking.
