The elusive sockeye salmon that lives in the northern waters of the Grizzlies West is one of the most sought-after fish. In this guide, we’ll cover how to hook this elusive giant fish.
What is the Legendary Sockeye Salmon?
-
The legendary sockeye salmon is one of the 14 legendary fish available in RDR2.
-
It’s an enormous, rare salmon located in Lake Isabella in western Ambarino
-
Catching it requires learning its location, using the right lure and perfecting your fishing technique.
-
Delivering the sockeye salmon unlocks unique rewards like its tooth for a talisman and the “Legendary Sockeye Salmon” outfit at the trapper.
Where to Find the Legendary Sockeye Salmon
-
The legendary sockeye salmon spawns in the southern part of Lake Isabella in western Ambarino.
-
That is, it swims in the open water north of where the map says “Isabella.”
-
This is a remote, snowy area so prepare for the cold. Stock up on provisions and warmer clothing.
-
Clear any struggle with rival fishermen before attempting to hook the salmon. It’s easily spooked.
Use the Right Special Lure
-
Equip the Special Lake Lure before trying to catch the legendary sockeye salmon.
-
This is the only lure that allows you to hook the fish. You cannot use regular lures.
-
If you don’t have the Special Lake Lure yet, purchase it from the bait and tackle shop in Lagras.
-
Make sure to equip the Special Lure directly from your item wheel when fishing at the spawn point.
Master the Fishing Mechanics
-
Use Eagle Eye to spot fish in the lake and confirm the salmon is close. Look for golden sparkles.
-
Cast your line far from shore to reach the deeper open water.
-
When you get a bite, don’t yank the rod back. Gently pull the right stick back and reel slowly to hook the fish.
-
Keep tension on the line and tire the salmon out. Don’t let it flee or break the line.
-
Once exhausted, it will surface. Use the right stick to keep it aligned as you reel it to shore.
Claim Your Reward
-
When you reel the legendary sockeye salmon to shore, pick it up directly. You cannot throw it back.
-
Stow it on your horse and deliver it to the post office or mail it via camp to unlock unique gear.
-
Take the salmon to the trapper to craft the unique “Legendary Sockeye Salmon” outfit.
-
Bring the tooth to a fence to craft the “Lake Sturgeon Tooth Talisman” for fortified cores.

Aries1331 5 years ago Its been 5 days, but if your still having trouble with the sockeye salmon at Isabella lake, do the following. When at the location, use eagle sight, L3 + R3 same time while Not aiming. Also make sure it is overcast. That means blizzard like, it will be hard to see and snowing. Thats when the salmon will bite. If any other weather, it will be there but will not bite. Hope this helps. If you need other help with this or other RD2 help, lmk. FlyingTomahawk 5 years ago Yeah this one was a tough one for me too but eventually catched it. First i was fishing from the edges of the lake aiming for the narrow spots between the lake edge and the ice. But no luck. Then i moved and went to the large island in the middle of the lake and looked for ripples in the water and fished there and catched it on my first try. Also dont throw the lure too far away the legendary fish pulls like crazy and youll be glad if you can hook him as close to you as possible. Also when he starts to pull hold down R3 to prevent the fish too pull away from you. You do use the special lake lure right? Just checking… |
sch91086 5 years ago I bet you are standing in the wrong spot. Legendary fish can only be caught in my experience if you are standing in exactly the right spot. FlyingTomahawk is giving you the same location I went to. It seems off from how the fish appears on the map. Go to the water where it is most open and try casting from there. |
