Ah, creamed turkey on toast. A dish that evokes memories of cozy evenings, warm kitchens, and the comforting aroma of roasted turkey. It’s a classic for a reason, and it’s the perfect way to use up leftover Thanksgiving turkey or even a rotisserie chicken

But let’s be honest, sometimes the traditional recipe can feel a bit, well, bland. That’s where we come in with a twist on the classic that adds a touch of excitement to this beloved dish.

Ingredients for the Creamed Turkey:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or white pepper if you prefer)
  • 5 cups cooked turkey, deboned and roughly chopped

Ingredients for the Toast:

  • Slices of your favorite bread
  • Butter, for spreading

Optional Add-Ins for a Flavor Boost:

  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Hot curry powder (to taste)
  • Chopped fresh thyme or Italian parsley

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for a couple of minutes, creating a smooth paste.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk, a little at a time, until the mixture is smooth and thickens. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Add the chopped turkey and any additional ingredients you’ve chosen. Stir gently to combine and heat through.
  4. While the turkey mixture is simmering, toast your bread slices to your desired level of crispness. Generously spread them with butter.
  5. Spoon the creamed turkey mixture over the toast and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks:

  • For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
  • If you have leftover turkey broth from roasting your turkey, use that instead of milk for an extra boost of flavor.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with different herbs and spices to find your perfect flavor combination.
  • This dish is also delicious served over mashed potatoes or rice.

Creamed Turkey on Toast

This recipe is filled with so many memories for me. This was our leftover turkey go to meal and I absolutely love it. It’s pure comfort. She isn’t a looker of a meal, but she is good. So easy to make too.

Made up of a basic roux and then you add the leftover shredded turkey. You can also use chicken for this. I’ve also used a rotisserie chicken for this during non Thanksgiving times and it’s also really good. But the gold standard is turkey.

The bread must then be toasted and generously covered with butter—this is a crucial step. Cover it with the turkey mixture and enjoy your new favorite leftover meal.
