Columbia River Salmon Fishing is some of the best Salmon fishing in the world. We spend our time fishing from The Dalles to the mouth of the river in the Astoria/Ilwaco area. This 160+ mile stretch of river boasts Spring, Summer, and Fall Salmon runs. Essentially, there are Salmon in this stretch of the Columbia River from March through October.
The year starts with the arrival of the Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon in March. These fish are known as the best eaters of any Salmon in the world. It might sound like I’m rooting too hard for the home team, but tests have shown that Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon has 7–10 times more fat than other salmon runs. The Columbia River is one of the most popular salmon fishing destinations in the Pacific Northwest As an avid angler, I’m always eager to find out when the salmon runs start each year and if the river will be open for fishing With fluctuating salmon populations, the seasons and regulations change annually, so it’s important to stay updated.
Overview of Salmon Fishing on the Columbia
Different kinds of salmon, like Chinook, coho, sockeye, and steelhead, have impressive runs in the Columbia River. These anadromous fish migrate from the ocean up the river to spawn. Anglers like the Columbia because it’s easy to get to, there are a lot of salmon that come back, and some of the Chinook are very big.
While certain sections are open year-round, the peak times to target salmon are from March through October. The lower river around Portland and the mouth near Astoria offer some of the earliest opportunities. As the fish move upstream through the summer popular spots are The Dalles, the Tri-Cities and near dams.
Both boat and bank fishing are productive on the Columbia. Common techniques include trolling with herring or lures, casting spinners, flies, or bait like prawns and anchovies, and plunking with weighted rigs. There is also a lively sturgeon fishery in the lower river and reservoirs.
2024 Salmon Seasons on the Columbia River
For 2024, the initial spring Chinook forecast is around 121,000 fish, which is lower than the 10-year average. However, salmon managers in Oregon and Washington have set several spring openings:

March 1 – April 5: From Buoy 10 near Astoria upstream to Beacon Rock. 6 per day, 2 adults, only 1 adult Chinook.

April 1–May 2: From the power lines on Tower Island upstream to the border between Oregon and Washington 6 per day, 2 adults, only 1 adult Chinook.

June 1–15: Tongue Point to Beacon Rock, plus the bank from Beacon Rock to Bonneville Dam 2 adults per day, only 1 Chinook.
So the lower river from Astoria through Portland and gorge areas will offer a couple chances for springers in March-April and June. Further upstream near The Dalles is open in April-May. Limits and retention rules vary per section.
In summer, Buoy 10 and the lower river usually opens for Chinook from July through September. The fall coho run picks up from August into October with opportunities around Portland and the gorge.

May 23rd, 2024 Update: 2024 Columbia River Fall Salmon Seasons Set
Buoy 10 and other Columbia River fall salmon season have been annouced. The seasons are different based on the stretch of river. Bag limit for the entire season is 2 salmon, only 1 of which may be a Chinook. It seems like a lot of info, but don’t worry. We know where and when the best fishing should be. We’re always happy to go over dates and options with you personally. Here’s the breakdown:
August 1st – August 29th: Retention of Chinook and Coho allowed. Only hatchery fish may be retained.
August 30th – September 3rd: Retention of all Chinook (native and hatchery) and hatchery Coho allowed.
September 4th – December 31st: Retention of hatchery Coho only. September and October trips can also include Dungeness crabbing, making for a great fisherman’s feast.
