For the holidays, which I always use as an excuse to prepare the family recipes from my family’s Russian-Ukrainian side, I’m sharing my authentic Russian beef Stroganoff with you. Because cooking, especially the foods we remember from our childhoods, is one of the few things other than eating that can bring us comfort. And who doesn’t need food that comforts right now?.

I’ve loved stroganoff ever since I first became fascinated with cooking while watching my rosy-cheeked baboushka make piroshki, cabbage rolls, and chicken kotleti, pack cucumbers into huge jars to make dill pickles, and stir enormous pots of borscht on the stove in her light-filled kitchen in the red-brick house my grandfather built in Blacktown, Sydney.

Although Orthodox Easter, which is observed according to the Julian calendar, isn’t until the following month, I believe that a traditional holiday is the ideal opportunity to remember my recently deceased loved ones and the culinary customs I cherished while growing up in our Russian-Ukrainian-Australian households in Sydney’s western suburbs in the 1970s.
