How to cook sprouted brown rice?

I purchased a bag of the Trader Joe’s Sprouted Rice, a mixture of sprouted brown rice and some black and red rice. I’ve successfully prepared brown and even black rice in my rice cooker before, but I’ve never prepared sprouted brown rice. The bag’s recommended cooking time of 30 minutes falls between the times for brown rice and white rice. I would prefer not to use a pot on the stove and my cooker only has four options: * White Rice * Brown Rice * Steam Cook * Delay Timer Any suggestions?

Brown Rice can be a nourishing food in your diet. However, like all grains, it contains phytic acid, which prevents your body from absorbing those fantastic nutrients. It takes more than just soaking the brown rice to make these nutrients available. To get the most benefit from the rice, it must be germinated (sprouted).

It is said that traditional cultures germinated their rice before consuming it. This germinated rice is also called “sprouted” brown rice, GABA brown rice (for the amino acid GABA, gamma aminobutyric acid, that is created during the sprouting), or hatsuga genmai in Japanese.

Thanks everyone for making this a popular instructable! This is a perfectly fine way to make good brown rice, but I should mention that I now use the method detailed here: http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.jp/2009/04/new-way-to-soak-brown-rice.html You can use the tools listed in this instructable with the new method, or you can use a warming box or room temperature if its over 27C where you live.

Since it has been a while since I published it, I’ll provide an update and respond to a few queries here. 1. The hot plate’s function is to maintain the rice at a temperature where it will sprout. If its warm out, you dont need the hot plate. The warming box I recently constructed is powered by a cheap light bulb connected to a temperature sensor; I placed the pot of rice inside, and it functions admirably. Easier but a bit more expensive than the hot plate. 2. As with alfalfa sprouts, you can also sprout rice by soaking, rinsing, and then turning the jar upside down over a strainer. Personally, I find that rice in water sprouts more readily. 3. Green tea reduces the amount of undesirable bacteria that lead to spoilage. But lately, I’ve had better success using whey or other fermenter starters. Anyone experimented with this?.

Learn how to make germination-ready brown rice (GBR) in this tutorial. Because it is healthier and, in my opinion, better tasting than the regular version, you should do this. I’ll go over some of the health advantages and how to make it.

For the amino acid GABA that is produced during the sprouting process, sprouted brown rice is also known as GABA brown rice or hatsuga genmai in Japanese. A brief history and some health advantages are on page one. Skip to page two to get straight to the how-to.
