In 1952, the Emery family sold the candle division of Emery Lard Oil and Candles because candles were becoming less popular as a source of light. Candle-lite Company changed its name and relocated its manufacturing to the Ohio town of Leesburg. Candle-lite Company investigated adding fragrance to candles to enhance the décor feel because it was innovation-driven. The fragranced candle becomes common in American homes by the 1980s.
By the 1900’s, Mary Emery (wife of Thomas J. Emery) fulfilled what she called her “vast responsibility” by giving all of her time and money to the most deserving causes. Prior to her passing in 1927, “Lady Bountiful” supported hospitals, schools, colleges, and orphanages. Emery’s last charitable deed was the establishment of a $29 million charitable trust for Cincinnati. Her generosity continues to leave a lasting imprint.
