Craving a mouthwatering turkey sandwich that elevates your taste buds? Look no further than these two culinary masterpieces: the Rye Turkey Melt from Land O’Lakes and the Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Spicy Mayo from The Original Dish. Both sandwiches boast unique flavors and textures, making it a tough call to choose just one. Let’s dive into the details and help you decide which one reigns supreme in your taste bud kingdom.
The Land O’Lakes Rye Turkey Melt:
This classic sandwich features grilled turkey on rye bread, offering a comforting and familiar flavor profile. The key to its deliciousness lies in the softened Land O’Lakes® Butter, which adds richness and helps achieve a perfectly golden brown crust. The thinly sliced deli smoked turkey provides a satisfying bite, while the Land O’Lakes® Deli American cheese melts beautifully, adding a creamy touch.
The Original Dish Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Spicy Mayo:
This sandwich takes things up a notch with its sophisticated and complex flavor profile. The star of the show is the smoked turkey, which boasts a unique depth of flavor compared to the classic deli turkey. The spicy mayo adds a delightful kick, while the melted havarti cheese provides a luxuriously creamy texture. The crispy bacon adds a satisfying crunch, and the alfalfa sprouts offer a refreshing lightness. The marinated red onions and fresh dill add a tangy and aromatic touch, making this sandwich a true flavor explosion.
The Verdict:
Both sandwiches offer a unique and delicious experience. The Land O’Lakes Rye Turkey Melt is a classic comfort food that’s perfect for a quick and satisfying lunch. The Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Spicy Mayo is a more elevated and complex option, ideal for those seeking a gourmet experience.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your personal preferences. If you’re looking for a familiar and comforting flavor the Rye Turkey Melt is the way to go. If you’re craving a more sophisticated and exciting flavor adventure the Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Spicy Mayo will tantalize your taste buds.
Additional Considerations:
- Time: The Rye Turkey Melt is a quicker option, taking only 10 minutes to prep and 30 minutes in total. The Smoked Turkey Sandwich requires a bit more effort, with 30 minutes of prep and 30 minutes of total time.
- Ingredients: The Rye Turkey Melt uses readily available ingredients, while the Smoked Turkey Sandwich requires some specialty items like havarti cheese and smoked turkey.
- Dietary Restrictions: Both sandwiches can be adapted to fit dietary restrictions. The Rye Turkey Melt can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free bread, and the Smoked Turkey Sandwich can be made dairy-free by using a vegan cheese alternative.

smoked turkey sandwich – the details
When the craving for a really good turkey sandwich hits, you want to do it right. And while it’s worthwhile to take the time to marinate red onions or prepare your own hot mayo, the most crucial step in making any sandwich, in my opinion, is starting with really high-quality ingredients.
Getting the best ingredients makes all the difference, even though it might not be something you can do every day. This is especially true for the weekend or when you have a little extra time.
The bread and the turkey are the two key components of this sandwich that I would particularly watch out for. This turkey sandwich would benefit greatly from a really nice loaf of rye bread (sourdough would be fantastic), one that is soft on the inside, crusty on the outside, and has that “just baked” appearance.
In terms of flavor and texture, freshly sliced smoked turkey from a nearby butcher is far superior to the pre-packaged, somewhat slimy substitute that can be found in most stores.
I bought both of these ingredients from one of my favorite local Chicago shops, Publican Quality Meats, a butcher and little market with all sorts of delicacies.
For the rest of the sandwich, I drew inspiration from a California-inspired club sandwich.
We have flavorful melted havarti cheese that adds a decadent cheesy texture, crispy bacon for richness, alfalfa sprouts for a light crunch, avocado for creaminess, marinated red onions for tang, and some fresh dill. We also have a spicy mayo that’s very simple to make and so good to have on hand.
It’s a turkey sandwich combination that I promise you’ll keep coming back to over and over again!
