How to Make a Turkey Costume: Two Easy and Fun DIY Options

Thanksgiving is a time for family friends, and of course, delicious food. But it’s also a time for fun and festive activities including making your own Thanksgiving crafts and costumes. If you’re looking for a creative and easy way to get into the Thanksgiving spirit, why not try making a turkey costume?

Two Easy DIY Turkey Costume Options:

There are many different ways to make a turkey costume, but two of the easiest and most popular options are the Paper Bag Turkey Craft and the DIY Turkey Costume from Primary.com.

Paper Bag Turkey Craft:

This simple and fun craft is perfect for young children. All you need is a brown paper bag, some construction paper, scissors, glue, and a marker. Simply cut out the triangles from the bottom/sides of the paper bag for arm holes, cut a hole in the bottom/center for your child’s head, and then cut out all the necessary turkey components (eyes, beak, dangling gobbler, and feathers) from the construction paper. Glue the eyes, beak, and gobbler to the paper bag, and then glue the feathers to a strip of brown paper to create a headband. Once the headband is complete, staple it to the paper bag and your child’s adorable turkey costume is ready to go!

DIY Turkey Costume from Primary.com:

While this costume requires a little more work than the Paper Bag Turkey Craft, it is still quite simple to make. Elmer’s Acid Free Foam Board, paint, black elastic, orange felt, string or yarn, and a turkey hat (optional) are required. You’ll also need a brown kids top and an orange kids bottom.

Here are the instructions for making the DIY Turkey Costume:

  1. For the turkey tail: Trace out scalloped turkey feathers all the way around the foam board. Cut out along the traced lines to create the tail. Paint the traced out areas in the following pattern: Brown, Red, Yellow, Red, Brown – starting from the top of each scallop. Wait for that side to dry and repeat the same steps on the other side.
  2. For the turkey feet: Cut two turkey feet out of orange felt. Cut some string or yarn that you have lying around, make sure it’s long enough to wrap around your kiddos ankles. Hot glue the string or yarn across the back of the felt feet and voila you have turkey feet!

Pro-Tips:

  • Create a beak and gobbler out of felt or use a turkey hat to tie the look together!
  • For the Paper Bag Turkey Craft, you can use a plain paper bag that you received containing a take-out order of food from a restaurant.
  • For the DIY Turkey Costume, you can use any brown and orange clothing that you have on hand.

Making a turkey costume is a fun and festive way to get into the Thanksgiving spirit. With just a few simple materials, you can create a costume that your child will love to wear. So get creative and have fun!

For the turkey tail:

  • Completely surround the foam board with scalloped turkey feathers. It should look like a semi-circle of scalloped feathers. Cut out along the traced lines to create the tail. Once the scalloped feathers are cut out, trace a few more layers with a pencil.
  • Paint the traced areas in the following pattern, starting at the top of each scallop: Brown, Red, Yellow, Red, Brown. Repeat the process on the other side once that side has had time to dry.
  • Place the board flat on the ground and encourage your child to lie on top of it once it has dried on both sides. Once the board is in the proper position, use a pencil to mark the locations of your child’s shoulder and neck as well as the ends of each side’s lowest ribs.
  • With some wiggle room, cut the black elastic into two strips of equal length. After hot-gluing the ends of each elastic strip to the board, line them up with the pencil markings. Make sure they are glued vertically, not horizontally!.
