The term “Turkey Shoot” might conjure up visions of hunters roaming the woods hunting for these wily birds. Then you see a sign promoting a Turkey Shoot being held every Sunday from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. for the next several weeks. You might wonder: How many turkeys can possibly be up in those woods?.
It turns out that the forested area that makes up the Boothbay Region Fish and Game Associations’ enclave is home to a considerable number of turkeys. You can be sure that none of these untamed birds will be shot, or not during a turkey shoot.
Although the format of Turkey Shoots varies from place to place, they always entail shooting targets with shotguns, rifles, and occasionally handguns. There is a competition for every skill level of shooter, requiring either practiced shooting or pure luck.
The BRF&GA’s 2022 Turkey Shoots are being held starting the first Sunday in October (Oct. 2) and each Sunday through the first Sunday in November (Nov. 6) from 10 to 2 on the club property located at 447 Dover Road, Boothbay.
Every Sunday, the following competitions are held; the winners will receive a range of frozen food prizes, such as turkeys:
Card Shoot: A shotgun competition in which competitors fire from 50 feet away at a 3″ by 5″ target. Everyone has an equal chance of winning this contest, regardless of experience level with a gun. The shooter with the pellet closest to the “X” in the middle of the target wins the prize.
Mechanical Target: Shooters use . 22 rimfire rifles are aimed five times at a reactive target of metal “spoons” at a distance of 25 yards. The shooter with the most “plinks” wins.
Skeet Shoot: A shotgun event. Shooting both clays before they land is the goal of the mechanical throwing device used to launch the clay pigeons. This shoot often takes multiple rounds to determine a winner, making for a great spectator event.
100-Yard Shoots: This event is only for larger caliber rifles that are typically used for hunting. It consists of two sorts of shooting, one at a distance of 100 yards and the other at a bench rest. The object is simply to have the most accurate shot in the bullseye.
All events are open to the public and all ages are welcome. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Hearing and eye protection are required. Food and refreshments will be served for nominal prices. The entry fees for each event will be decided upon the day of the competition; however, they will be minimal due to the fact that certain events will include food prizes and ammunition costs. Come on up to the club and join in, or just enjoy a juicy burger and watch!.
Setting the Optimal Distance for a Thrilling Turkey Shoot
Ever wondered how far away those elusive turkey targets are in a turkey shoot? Well, wonder no more! This guide dives deep into the world of turkey shoot target distances, providing all the info you need to set up a successful and exciting event.
The Ideal Distance: Finding the Sweet Spot
The optimal distance for turkey shoot targets depends on the size of the targets and the type of shells being used. For targets sized 7-1/2, 8, and 9, the sweet spot lies between 56 and 60 feet. This distance also works well with the popular Wagner 2-2-10 shells.
Why This Distance?
This distance provides a challenging yet achievable target for shooters, promoting healthy competition and those oh-so-satisfying tie-breakers and shoot-offs. It’s all about striking the perfect balance between difficulty and fun.
A Word of Caution: Safety First!
Remember safety is paramount in any turkey shoot. Never use 10-gauge shells in a gun with chokes and wad stoppers. These shells are designed for smoothbore “10 guns” specifically built for them.
Setting Up Your Turkey Shoot Like a Pro
1. Target Placement:
Our target holder system offers flexibility, allowing you to set a permanent distance or move them easily to different pipes in the ground. Just make sure to cover any pipes to prevent them from filling with shell wads.
2. Measuring the Distance:
Measure the distance from the trigger line on the rail, not from the edge of the shooting platform. This ensures consistency and fair play.
3. Keeping Things Clean and Dry:
Use drainage gravel to keep the card runners from getting muddy. Consider adding a roof over the targets for rainy day shoots and a backdrop to catch lead shot.
4. Embrace the Competition!
Turkey shoots are all about friendly competition and camaraderie. So, grab your shotgun, gather your friends, and get ready for some exciting target practice!
Remember, inches don’t make much of a difference, but a foot or two can definitely spice things up!
