My preferred method for preparing a quick lunch, dinner, or snack is using shredded chicken from the crockpot. If a recipe calls for shredded chicken, you can use this slow cooker chicken to make buffalo chicken dip, sliders, chicken casseroles, pasta salads, and more!
By incorporating some taco seasoning, you can transform this recipe into tacos with shredded chicken. Alternatively, you can pile it high on a plate with some beans and slaw for a delectable shredded barbecue chicken dinner. Shredded chicken from a slow cooker can be prepared ahead of time and frozen for quick meals that take only a few minutes to prepare.
Any meal that calls for cooked chicken, such as chicken parmesan casserole or even homemade chicken salad sandwiches, will benefit from the tenderness and flavor of this simple Crock Pot pulled chicken.
How to Store and Freeze Crock Pot Shredded Chicken
To have cooked chicken available whenever you need it for a variety of quick and simple shredded chicken recipes throughout the week, divide your crockpot pulled chicken into smaller portions and store in the refrigerator or freezer as desired.
What Type of Chicken is Best for Shredded Chicken?
Here are my ideas and recommendations for selecting the ideal chicken for slow cooker recipes because there are so many varieties and so little time:
Boneless vs. Bone-in Chicken.
To make shredded chicken, you can use both bone-in and boneless chicken.
Skin On or Off.
Although you can cook your chicken with the skin on, it will probably get soggy. It is best to remove any skin before you start cooking for this recipe.
Do chicken thighs or bone-in chicken breasts/thighs cook longer?
Utilize bone-in split chicken breasts or chicken thighs if you do want to cook chicken for a longer period of time. These are excellent ingredients for dishes like our Bourbon Chicken or our Southwest Chicken Marinade.
These cuts can handle longer cooking times and retain their moisture a bit better. Our tests show they reach their internal safe temperature anywhere from 3-4 on LOW. However, America’s Test Kitchen (a source we really trust!), says they can withstand cooking times of up to 4-6 hours on LOW. It’s still not that all day recipe but might be a great meal to throw in the slow cooker around lunch time.
