With this recipe for instant pot tri tip roast, roasting a roast couldn’t be simpler. This pot roast has plenty of flavor thanks to a quick and easy dry rub, and the instant pot reduces cooking time in half.
There is less waste and fat in each serving because this cut is lean. Make a delicious sandwich with the leftovers, or get inventive and use it in salads or tacos.
The name “beef tri tip roast” refers to a boneless roast that is cut from the bottom of the sirloin and has a triangular shape. It’s lean with good flavor and tender when cooked perfectly. I like to use grass-fed meat whenever possible. See my guide for finding grass-fed beef near you.
Seasoning is essential for that beefy flavor to shine through. Although salt, black pepper, and garlic powder are necessary, you can also use other seasonings if you like.
Using the sauté function, the meat is first sautéed in cooking oil. Avocado oil is ideal for sautéing because it has a high smoke point and is heart-healthy. See my list of the safest cooking oils.
Pat your tri tip dry with a clean paper towel. All the spices should be combined in a small bowl before being sprinkled over the meat and rubbed in with your hands.
Activate the sauté function, then pour oil into the pot. Once the oil is hot, add the tri-tip and cook it for 2 minutes before flipping it over and cooking it for an additional 2 minutes.
As always, the precise ingredients and measurements are listed on the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Stop using the sauté function, then use a wooden spoon to remove any brown bits from the pot’s bottom. Add the broth and then put in the trivet.
Reposition the meat onto the trivet and cook at high pressure for 25 minutes. Use the pressure valve’s quick release once the allotted time has passed.
Open the tri tip carefully, then place it on a cutting board. Slice and serve the meat after it has rested for five minutes.
The tri tip derives its name from its triangular shape and comes from the sirloin’s bottom portion. It can be grilled, roasted, barbecued, or smoked, and it is flavorful and lean. It can be challenging to locate at the grocery store, but it is simple to get from a butcher.
The tri tip roast is typically much less expensive per pound than other steak cuts like the ribeye, despite the fact that beef tends to be more expensive than other types of meat. But it’s incredibly tasty and ideal for a special occasion or Sunday dinner.
How to Cook Tri-Tip in an Instant Pot or Pressure Cooker
Similar instructions apply to cooking tri-tip in an electric pressure cooker, an Instant Pot, a multi-cooker like the Ninja Foodi, and a stove-top pressure cooker.
Searing the Meat
The saute function, which enables you to brown the roast, is not available on all electric pressure cookers. The meat can be seared in a frying pan or you can skip that step if your pressure cooker does not allow it. Even if you don’t brown your tri-tip first, it will still be tender.
Use the Rack
No matter what appliance you use, you should put the tri-tip roast on the rack or trivet that came with your pot before cooking it under high pressure so that it sits on the rack or trivet rather than directly on the bottom of the pot.
How Much Liquid Do I Add?
Add 1 cup of beef broth when preparing Tri-Tip in an electric pressure cooker or Instant Pot. Due to the fact that stovetop pressure cookers release more steam than Instant Pots and Electric Pressure Cookers, add 2 cups of beef broth when cooking Tri-Tip in a stovetop pressure cooker.
When the meat is done cooking, use the Quick Release Method.
You must carefully switch the release valve for an Instant Pot, an Electric Pressure Cooker, or a multicooker like the Ninja Foodi from “sealed” to “release.” When moving the release valve, I advise using a potholder on your hand because the steam is extremely hot.
If you’re using a stovetop pressure cooker, transfer the pot to the sink and run cold water over it until the steaming stops.
