Spicy Baked Salmon Fillets
Baking salmon is one of the easiest ways to prepare it. All you need is some foil, seasoning, and about 15 minutes in the oven. The foil seals in the natural juices for tender flaky texture. To give basic baked salmon a flavor boost I coat it in a mixture of brown sugar, chipotle chile powder, lime, and salt before baking. The sweet and spicy rub adds big, bold flavor in no time.
Ingredients
- 3/4 lb salmon fillet (skin on or off)
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar (optional)
- 1 1/2 tsp chipotle chile powder
- Zest of 1 lime plus 1 Tbsp juice
- 1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 Tbsp olive oil or melted butter
- 3 Tbsp chopped cilantro
Directions
- Heat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with foil and coat with nonstick spray.
- Pat salmon dry with paper towels. Place fillet in center of foil.
- In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, chipotle powder, lime zest and salt.
- Brush salmon with oil and lime juice. Sprinkle seasoning mixture on top.
- Fold foil around salmon to seal. Bake 12-18 minutes until salmon flakes easily.
- Broil salmon 3 minutes until top is golden brown. Check temp – 145°F means done.
- Let rest in foil 5 minutes then serve. Top with cilantro.
The sweet and spicy rub gives the salmon a hit of heat and lime brightens up the flavors. The salmon bakes up moist and tender in its foil packet – so easy and delicious!
You can play around with the spicy seasoning blend to suit your tastes. Some ideas:
- Cajun – Use Cajun seasoning instead of the chipotle rub.
- Garlic – Add 1 tsp garlic powder.
- Indian – Swap the rub for curry powder and cayenne.
Serve the spicy baked salmon over rice or greens, in tacos or sandwiches, or all on its own. No matter how you enjoy it, this salmon is sure to satisfy.
Spicy Salmon Sushi Rolls
If you love spicy salmon sushi rolls from your local restaurant, you can absolutely make them at home. Homemade sushi is cheaper than takeout, customizable, and fun to prepare. Even though raw fish might seem intimidating, you can make great sushi with just a few key ingredients and a little practice.
For these spicy salmon rolls, you’ll need sushi rice, nori sheets, spicy mayo, and salmon. Look for wild-caught salmon fillets and prepare and handle the raw fish properly. Follow these tips for rolling success:
Ingredients
- Cooked sushi rice
- Nori sheets
- Spicy mayo (kewpie mayo, sriracha, green onion)
- 8 oz salmon fillet, sliced into strips
- Soy sauce
- Sriracha
- Sesame seeds
- Cucumber sticks
- Green onion
Directions
- Cook sushi rice until tender, then mix with rice vinegar dressing.
- Lay a nori sheet on bamboo mat, shiny side down. Spread rice in a thin layer on nori.
- Place salmon strips, cucumber sticks, spicy mayo down center of rice.
- Roll up tightly using mat. Seal edge with water. Slice roll into rounds.
- Top rounds with more spicy mayo, green onion, and sesame seeds.
Tips
- Use a sharp knife and wet fingertips when handling rice.
- Don’t overstuff the rolls – use thin layers of rice and fillings.
- Slice each piece right before serving so the nori stays crisp.
The spicy mayo, sriracha, and salmon provide plenty of heat and flavor. Putting even more spicy mayo on top of the sliced rolls makes sure that every bite is spicy. Crunchy cucumber and sesame seeds balance out the spicy flavors.
When you learn how to make sushi at home, you can make rolls that suit your tastes and save money at the same time. Have a sushi party with your friends and serve spicy salmon, tuna, shrimp, and vegetable rolls.

Is it cheaper to make your own sushi?
Yes. Yes, I said yes again. As much as I’d love to take our big family to our favorite sushi bar every week, we can’t. Making it at home has saved us a ton of money.
Tips for making Spicy Salmon Sushi Rolls
- The rice is sticky! The first few rolls we made weren’t very pretty, and I was starting to give up. But don’t give up! Keep a bowl of water nearby and wet your fingers as you press the rice onto the Nori.
- Dont over stuff them. You only need a thin line of fillings around which to wrap and roll the nori. Likewise with the rice, just a thin layer.
- Sharpen your best, sharpest knife before beginning. A thin blade is helpful too. Clean the knife every time you cut the nori so that the cuts are clean and the nori doesn’t tear.
- Also, remember to plan ahead and put your fish in the fridge to thaw. There is no better way to cut and slice food than when it is still a little frozen. Please be careful with it and don’t let it thaw at room temperature. Safety first with all raw proteins, please!.
