Turkey is a country full of beauty. From the chaos of Istanbul to the mesmerising views of Cappadocia and everything in between. I think everyone should travel to Turkey at least once in their lifetime, but is it safe for female travelers traveling alone?
If you’re like me and you like to travel alone, you should think about that before you go on any solo trip. This post will get right to the point and detail my experiences as a single woman traveling to Turkey.
So you’re dreaming of exploring the bustling streets of Istanbul, marveling at the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, and soaking up the sun on the Turquoise Coast. But one question lingers: Is Turkey safe for women, especially for solo female travelers?
The short answer is yes, Turkey is generally safe for women, including solo female travelers. However like any destination it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
Understanding the Culture:
Before diving into safety tips let’s take a moment to understand the cultural context. Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country with conservative social norms. While this doesn’t mean you need to cover yourself head-to-toe dressing modestly (think covering shoulders and knees) is a sign of respect and can help avoid unwanted attention.
Safety Tips for Solo Female Travelers in Turkey:
1. Use Your Common Sense:
This golden rule applies everywhere, but especially when traveling solo. Be aware of your surroundings, avoid walking alone in dark or deserted areas, and trust your gut instinct. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from the situation.
2. Dress Respectfully:
As mentioned earlier, dressing modestly is a good idea. Opt for loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. This doesn’t mean you can’t express your personal style, but be mindful of cultural sensitivities.
3. Keep an Eye on Your Belongings:
Pickpocketing can happen anywhere, so keep your valuables secure. Use a sturdy bag with a secure closure, and avoid flashing expensive gadgets. Consider using a money belt to keep your cash and important documents safe.
4. Purchase Travel Insurance:
Travel insurance is a must-have for any trip, especially when traveling solo. It provides peace of mind and financial protection in case of unexpected events like lost luggage, medical emergencies, or trip cancellations.
5. Check the Foreign Travel Advice Website:
Always check the latest travel advice from your government before embarking on your journey. This will provide valuable information on any potential risks, safety concerns, and visa requirements.
6. Consider Your Experience:
If you’re new to solo travel, starting with a less challenging destination might be a good idea. Turkey can be a bit overwhelming at times, especially in the larger cities. However, if you’re an experienced solo traveler, you’ll likely find Turkey to be a welcoming and safe destination.
7. Learn a Few Basic Turkish Phrases:
Making an effort to learn a few basic Turkish phrases can go a long way. Not only will it help you communicate more effectively, but it will also show locals that you’re respectful of their culture.
8. Be Assertive:
If you encounter unwanted attention, don’t be afraid to be assertive. A firm “no” or a confident walk away usually does the trick. Remember, you have the right to say no and to feel safe.
9. Trust Your Instincts:
If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Trust your gut instinct and remove yourself from the situation. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
10. Enjoy Your Trip!
With the proper precautions in place, you can have an amazing and safe trip to Turkey. Embrace the culture, explore the stunning landscapes, and create unforgettable memories.

Why do some people choose to travel alone?
I’ve been travelling alone since the age of eighteen. I used to travel across the UK on cross-country trips to see my favorite band perform live and catch up with friends. Then, five days later, when I was twenty-two years old, I spent five days drinking sangria and taking in the sights of Barcelona after graduating from university.
It was during that trip that I gained a whole new love for travelling by myself. As a young woman, it’s empowering to step foot in a foreign country alone. Even better is the knowledge that you can do anything you want, whenever you want, for the duration of your trip.
Fancy a lie-in? Fine. Want to get up at the crack of dawn to watch the sunrise? Also fine. The choice is yours….
Many people choose to travel alone because of the freedom that comes with it. There is nothing quite like enjoying a foreign country on your own terms. Plus, it gives you more opportunities to meet like-minded travellers who share similar interests. How fab is that?.
Do females get a lot of unwanted attention in Turkey?
This is another question that came up, but it felt more like a warning. Some countries in the middle east (and beyond) have a bad reputation when it comes to hassle. Because of this, women are frequently advised to exercise caution, particularly when traveling alone.
For example, when I decided to head to Morocco alone for two weeks, everyone thought I was crazy. They had read horror stories years ago about how “unsafe” it was and begged me not to go. Despite this, Morocco fast became my favourite country in the world. Even with the hassle.
So when I touched down in Istanbul, I expected it to be similar to my time in Morocco. Things like marriage proposals and unwanted glares wouldn’t have surprised me. However, travelling alone in Turkey wasn’t anything like it was in Morocco. I was mostly left alone to shop at my own pace even as I meandered through the Grand Bazaar.
Now, this isn’t to say that women don’t receive any unwanted attention at all. A few times, Turkish men asked to take me out to dinner, and when I declined, they begged me not to “break them.” One waiter even touched my bum (ew), BUT, that was just a small minority. It would be wrong to taint all men in Turkey with the same brush.
Throughout my trip, there were numerous instances where it was evident the locals simply wanted me to enjoy myself. They had no malicious intent and truly wanted me to enjoy their country.
