Also, the age of the transformer may make a difference. The voltage it can produce might not be sufficient to power the Ring. You can also check this and, if the transformer is not producing 16 volts, replace it. Additionally, as with all electrical work, if you are not comfortable performing it, hire an electrician.

This is why testing your power wire at the transformer after attaching a meter to it at the doorbell switch will provide you with the information you require. The voltage at the transformer and the location of the doorbell switch should be the same. If you do not there is something else happening/wrong.

For smart thermostats Common voltage is 24V. Doorbells typically use 16V, so it’s very likely that this is what you have. I think the doorbell transformers are typically located on or close to the furnace in most homes. This isn’t always the case. Although most people should have either 24V or 16V, I think Ring is right.

Having said that, I’ve experienced problems with my Ring Pro and my home’s chime even with a good high VA transformer. In essence, the voltage drop caused by the chime that the Ring activates causes the video to crash. I gave in and purchased the Ring Chime after receiving a new power kit from Ring and two different transformers.
