Size: Pin-type shelf supports, regardless of their design, are made to fit in either a 5mm-dia hole or a 1/4″-dia. hole. European-style frameless cabinets have 5mm-dia. holes, spaced 32mm apart. Holes for 1/4″-dia. pins are typically spaced 1″ apart. The hole spacing will vary depending on the jig you use because the majority of shelf pin jigs accept spring-actuated drill bits for both hole diameters (see sidebar on facing page).
The most popular design for shelf supports is a simple paddle design. Round support pins also fall into this fundamental category, but I don’t like how they have a propensity to gradually leave small recessed areas in wooden shelves. They’re more suitable for smaller casework projects like curio cabinets. For shelves that must support a lot of weight, L-shaped brackets with pins are a good option. If you intend to install glass shelves, look for shelf supports with plastic coating for necessary cushioning and holding power.
