Alanya Teleferik is a gondola cable car from Sultan Alaadin Cd (Damlataş station) by the beach to Ehdemek (Kale station) at the top of the citadel. There are a few small coves for harbors and inland access scattered along Turkey’s mostly rocky coastline; however, the low Pamphylia coastal plain stretches eastward from Antalya to Alanya. Even though it is small and encircled by the Taurus Mountains, it has attracted settlers from antiquity to the present, when Boeing and Airbus planes take off. “Pamphylia” translates to “land of many peoples,” and multiple peoples have inhabited this craggy but defendable crag; each has given it a different name. The Luwians named Korakassa, or “protruding city,” where the crag splits the long stretch of beach. Coracesium and Kalonoros came next. Only after the Seljuk conquest in the thirteenth century by Sultan Alaeddin Kayqubad I was it renamed Alaiye in his honor by a crafty courtier.
