Advice on which is a healthier option for breakfast: bagels or English muffins, depending on how much you love each.
The winner? English muffins. (And, Im talking about whole-wheat English muffins, gals). The English muffin, or humble crumpet (why does that word always make me want to giggle? ), is typically a better option even though neither will send you to hell in a handbasket. Heres why:
*Bagel size has out of control in recent years; according to the majority of nutritionists, the “standard” bagel is frequently equivalent to two bagels from ten years ago.
*Bagels frequently contain more sugar than other breakfast foods, which is not a big deal but adds up in terms of calories if you’re trying to lose weight.
Make an egg white spinach breakfast sandwich (one of my favorites) on English muffins, which are better for healthy breakfast sandwiches because they don’t have a hole in the middle.
The Middle: Doughnut
2880 calories, 7 g of saturated fat, 340 mg of sodium, 31 g of carbohydrates, and 13 g of sugar.
Although a doughnut frequently contains fewer calories than a bagel, because they are typically smaller and less dense, most people eat more than one, seriously ruining their day’s nutrition. And depending on which one you choose, even the caveat that doughnuts have fewer calories may not be true. For instance, a Bismark (filled with pastry cream) has 490 calories while a Dunkin plain glazed doughnut has 260 calories.
Some experts have a tough time finding any redeeming qualities in doughnuts. “No matter the type of flour used, whole wheat versus white, or if theyre baked over fried, it is just difficult to create a healthy doughnut,” says nutritionist Lisa Richards. Still if you stick to the ones with less calories (and eat just one), you might partially mitigate the health damage.
What is a croissant? What are croissants made of?
French pastries called croissants are made with yeast, flour, salt, sugar, milk, eggs, and a lot of butter. Laminating, which involves repeatedly folding the dough into the butter before cutting and shaping it, gives croissants their distinctively light and flaky texture.
