Why does a suction cup stick to the wall?

Apply these straightforward strategies to stop suction cups from sliding down your mirror or falling off the shower wall once and for all.

Suction cups can come in really handy for hanging up organizers, decor, and so much more. Since shower walls aren’t really conducive to other methods of hanging things at our house, we find them especially useful there.

I have suction cups in my shower that serve a variety of purposes, such as holding Dave’s shaving mirror up in the air and providing a place to hang loofahs. And even though we now adore the adaptability and usability of our suction cup shower accessories, there was a brief period of time not too long ago when I was at my wit’s end with them!

I was determined to find out how to get suction cups to stick after finding Dave’s shaving mirror sitting haphazardly in the sink after its suction cup had failed yet again, and thanks to the following tips I discovered during my research, I can happily report that all of the suction cups around our home have stayed in place ever since!:-)

So use these steps the next time you need a suction cup to stick and watch the difference they make!

Watch the Temperature

Avoid using a suction cup on your car window to attach a GPS or anything else when it’s cold outside. This can hinder the cup’s flexibility. The latch won’t be as strong as it would be in warmer weather.

Hold off until it is at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Run the defrost on the highest setting if you must put it up in colder weather to make sure your window is a little bit warmer. And until you mount the suction cup, keep it as warm as you can.

Use Some Water

A little bit of water can do wonders for boosting a suction cup’s grip. Using warm water, rinse the whole cup so it softens it up.

Shake the water out of the cup quickly before hanging it on the wall. That can often do the trick.

Choose a smooth, flat surface to apply your suction cup.

Suction cups form an airtight seal on an even surface. Flat surfaces of glass, acrylic, Formica, and stainless steel are all great places to make suction cups stick better. You can even make suction cups stick to plastic as long as it’s a hard surface. The suction cup is more likely to fall if the surface has any slight curves or textures since it could let air into the suction cup and break the seal.[1]

    • Try placing suction cups on the glass door, a sizable tile, or a smooth area of the acrylic wall if you’re having trouble getting them to adhere in the shower.
    • For suction-cup phone mounts, avoid putting them on textured dashboards. Consider mounting it on your radio display or the windshield.
    • On porous surfaces like untreated tiles, fabric, or rough, soft plastics, suction cups do not adhere well.
