How to make the Best Ever Baked Beans
Because they have ground beef and bacon, they take a little more work to make, but I promise it’s worth it!!
First, you’ll cook the ground beef and drain the fat. Place the bacon slices on a foil-lined baking sheet and bake at 400F until done. Let the bacon cool then chop it!.
Once you’ve got the ground beef and bacon cooked, it’s super easy. You will drain the extra bean sauce from the cans of beans because you will be making your own sauce to mix them with.
Next, stir together the beans, the cooked beef, crispy bacon pieces and the remaining ingredients. Here are a couple different ways to cook them:
- On the stove, put the beans in a large skillet and mix them. Cook for 30 minutes over medium-low heat. Be sure to stir occasionally.
- For the oven, put the beans in a casserole dish and cover it with aluminum foil. You can also use a Dutch oven with a lid. Bake at 350F for 1 hour.
- Put the ingredients in the crock pot and stir them around every so often. Cook on high for an hour or on low for two to three hours.
- Change up the beans by replacing one can of baked beans with a can of kidney beans or navy beans that have been drained. If you’ve ever had “cowboy beans,” this one has more kinds of beans. Regular ‘ol butter beans are my fave.
- Sprinkle some diced red or green pepper on top to make it look and taste better.
- Add some crushed red pepper and cayenne pepper to make it hotter.
Spoon them into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 5 days. I do not recommend freezing baked beans as they’ll be super mushy after freezing.
Baked beans go with almost any main dish. They’re especially good with sandwiches and grilled meats – hot dogs, burgers, brats, pork chops, chicken, etc!.
Feel and taste! One thing I love about this hearty side dish is how the soft beans, meaty ground beef, and crispy bacon pieces all feel and taste. Of course, taste is important too! The bacon gives the beans a nice smoky flavor, and the brown sugar makes the flavor stronger. While simple canned beans are fine, this recipe for baked beans with ground beef will blow all of them away!!
This question should really be asked, “What’s the best way to spice up a can of baked beans?” I like to start by cooking 8 bacon slices and a pound of ground beef. As soon as the meat is done, I put the beans, onion, sugar, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, beef, and bacon in the pot where they will be cooked. You can cook them in either a baking dish, a slow cooker or a large saucepan. After the sugars have broken down and the onions are soft, add the beans and cook until they are hot. Yum!.
Yes!! The many ways to cook these beans is one of the things I love about this recipe. The slow cooker is one of those ways. Although every slow cooker is different, it will take most a couple hours. I think you should cook them on high for an hour, stirring every now and then, and then on low for another two to three hours.
Ingredients for Meaty Baked Beans
- Your favorite brand of “pork n beans” or “original” baked beans in a can
- Lean ground beef
- Bacon
- Sugar
- Brown sugar – Light or dark brown sugar
- Ketchup: If you want it a little sourder, you could use half ketchup and half barbecue sauce.
- Onion – I prefer to use white or yellow onion
- Black vinegar, white vinegar, or apple cider vinegar all work well. You could also use Worcestershire sauce instead.
- Yellow Mustard—If you’d rather, you can use Dijon mustard instead.
