The breathtaking region of Cappadocia in central Turkey is well-known for its legendary scenery, cave dwellings, remarkable rock formations, and, of course, the hundreds of hot air balloons that soar through the skies each morning at first light. It will also take you at least a week to explore all of Cappadocia’s amazing hiking opportunities. I spent ten days exploring the historic valleys, trekking every hiking trail in Cappadocia, and hot air ballooning. I’ve compiled this list of the top Cappadocia activities to help you make the most of your time exploring this breathtaking region.
My personal favorites are the Cappadocia Royal Queen Flight for its luxurious flight package and treatment, and the Sunset ATV Tour for its gorgeous sunset views over the dunes.
In this Cappadocia Travel Guide blog post, I will detail each of the individual places I visited. If you are particularly interested in one of the locations on this list and would like more details about how to get there, what to expect, and to view all of the photos from that specific Cappadocia attraction, click on the link to that blog post to view the specific article I wrote about that location.

Since it links Goreme and Uchisar, Pigeon Valley, also known as Guvercinlik Valley, is one of the most popular hiking routes in Cappadocia. Along the route, you will find cave dwellings, ancient paintings, earth pillars, and of course… pigeons.
The trail leads you through thick trees and several caves. If you look closely, the walls of the cave dwellings where people from the Byzantine era once lived have a number of ancient paintings on them. The Pigeon Valley Trail is definitely one of the top things to do in Goreme, Cappadocia.

The Zelve Open-Air Museum is an incredible site that once housed one of the largest communities in Cappadocia. You can stroll around the town square, historic homes, churches, and religious chambers in this amazing cave town.
Here, the designers have done a great job of offering a clear path for guests to follow as well as paths and trails for those who want to go a little further. There’s nothing worse than only being able to see the tourist attractions when there’s so much more to see, but this location lets you fully appreciate the scenery. In fact, with twenty times as many visitors per day, it’s far more fascinating than the packed Goreme Open-Air Museum.

The breathtaking valley known as Imaginary Valley, or Devrent Valley in Cappadocia, is home to numerous peculiar rock formations, many of which are thought to resemble animal shapes.
Devrent Valley provides a singular opportunity to immerse oneself among the earth’s pillars and rock formations, unlike other Cappadocia sites. You can explore and discover as you wind your way up the steep, slippery hills. If you don’t mind deviating from the path, you will love discovering these peculiar natural formations as you meander through Devrent Valley.

LOVER’S HILL SUNSET POINT
Lover’s Hill, also known as Asiklar Tepesi, is the most popular place to watch the sunset in Goreme Town, Cappadocia, though there are a few other great spots as well. It is also known as “Sunset Point” if you are staying in town, which is a pretty good indication that this is THE place to go for sunsets.
Lover’s Hill Sunset Point is a short stroll from most of Goreme’s hotels, which accommodate the majority of Cappadocia tourists, contributing to the town’s charm. The majority of people who wish to watch the sunset do so from Red Valley Sunset Point, Lover’s Hill, or the terrace of their hotel. Therefore, as you can imagine, Lover’s Hill is quite busy being the closest sunset spot.

Reaching as far as Uchisar and Goreme, Ortahisar Castle is one of Cappadocia’s best viewpoints, providing stunning views!
At the base of the castle, you will first navigate a maze of cobblestone lanes and pathways. There is a chance that you will become distracted by either a wine cellar, a cafe, or both. The climb up only takes approximately five minutes because you are only going to the middle of the castle and not all the way to the top. The way leads you through the inner caves, ladders and exterior stairs of the castle.
The castle is bathed in a golden light just before the sun sets, providing stunning views in every direction. The platform boasts a lookout that can be seen from three different angles. While Goreme has a ton of incredible things to do, Ortahisar and Uchisar are also worth visiting because of their stunning castles and surrounding trails.
