Good news about turkey prices this year if you’re planning a home-cooked Thanksgiving feast
With so many food items seeing price increases for over a year due to record-high inflation, cooks preparing large Thanksgiving meals may finally be relieved about turkey prices.
Local grocery stores are advertising prices for some turkeys as low as 49 cents per pound.
Grand Rapids-based Meijer, a major Midwest grocery chain, recently revealed that, when an automatic mPerks coupon is used at checkout, customers can purchase the store brand of frozen turkeys for just 49 cents per pound.
According to Josh Potts, a Meijer poultry buyer, at 49 cents per pound, that puts turkey prices roughly where they were in the 1930s. Meijer expects to sell, they said, 1 million turkeys this holiday season.
“Our top priority is providing value and quality to our customers this holiday season, but we are aware that turkey prices have increased significantly in many places this year,” Potts stated. We put a lot of effort into keeping costs low for our clients so they can enjoy this traditional holiday meal with their loved ones. ”.
Area Kroger stores are also selling its brand of frozen turkeys for 49 cents a pound. You will need to download a digital coupon in order to purchase a turkey at Kroger stores for 49 cents per pound.
Walmart recently revealed that the average price reduction from last year will apply to a market basket of specific items.
An average Thanksgiving basket that contains thirty items and can serve eight to ten people costs $77, or roughly $8. 50 per person. A 16-pound turkey, spiral-cut ham, gravy, French fried onions, fresh and canned vegetables, and other typical Thanksgiving fare are included.
A basket of 21 convenience items to make the meal will average $70 or $7.75 per person.
According to a news release, Aldis’ “The More the Merrier” price reductions allow for more people to sit at the table.
Customers can expect price reductions on seasonal items such as gravy, potatoes, green beans, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Also reduced are pantry staples like butter and flour.
Aldi President David Rinaldo stated in a news release that “with inflation still looming, we’re providing shoppers extra relief to make the holidays a time for celebration, not stress.” “There should always be room for more guests at Thanksgiving because what’s served on the table is just as important as who is seated around it. To that end, ALDI is offering significant discounts on essential items.” ”.
A recent report from the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed wholesale prices of frozen are on the decline.
Prices for turkeys for the holidays were $1. 25 per pound in September or down 43 cents from a year ago. Thats the lowest monthly average price, the USDA said, since July 2021.
The majority of the price increases over the past few years have been attributed to the outbreak of avian influenza, which caused Turkey’s production to drop by 6%, according to the USDA. This year, production has recovered and since April 2023 it has been above last years.
